Grief and Loss

Mountain Sunset
Grief and loss are a natural part of life. They are an equalizing factor for all humanity. Every culture has a process for coping with the death of a significant person in our lives. Cultures are not as specific about other forms of loss like loss of a relationship, either with a person or with a loved pet, loss of job or status, loss of a part of our physical body, or loss of function of our bodies or our minds. All these losses are very difficult to negotiate. Additionally, more adults than ever are caring for elderly relatives who have significantly diminished physical and mental capacity. Any and all of these changes call for time to make adjustments.

In our hurry-up society, many of these losses are ignored or minimized in favor of “getting on with it” or “getting back to normal.” Consequently, many individuals suffering one of these losses may begin to feel that he / she is abnormal if the grief and depression (normal responses to loss) linger for longer than is comfortable for friends or relatives.

Most authorities agree that there is no timeline when it comes to grief and loss. One person may grieve in a way that puts him / her back into the mainstream fairly quickly, while another may be unable to return to stasis for much longer. Also, the emotional connection to the loss can make a difference in the time of grieving.

It is generally recognized that the most support for the loss comes immediately. As the days or weeks go by, fewer and fewer friends, relative, etc., come to offer a hand. Thus, just as the grieving person needs more help and support, less is available.

Many people find the help and support in grief groups. Some seek counseling, with the therapist acting as a guide through unfamiliar territory of grief, especially in the first year. Currently, many good books about grief are also available.
